About the Euro-Pēds Program History of Euro-Pēds® National Center for Intensive Pediatric PT

Euro-Pēds®opened in October 1999 as the first hospital-based intensive therapy program in the world out of North Oakland Medical Centers, a non-profit hospital in Pontiac, Michigan. Part of the mission of North Oakland Medical Centers is to explore new, innovative programs and services to meet community needs. After extensive research into the intensive therapy techniques that were pioneered in Eastern Europe, a commitment was made to open a clinic. The hospital hired physical therapists that specialized in this unique therapy, and the program took off immediately. While originally focusing on the treatment of children with cerebral palsy, the therapy has evolved to successfully treat children with a variety of special needs, such as Traumatic Brain Injuries, Spina Bifida, Down Syndrome, and metabolical disorders.

To date over 800 children and young adults have received this unique therapy and have gained hundreds of new skills including better head control, learning to roll, sit up, transfer, and to take their first steps.

Slawek Walenski "It is really exciting to be involved in the steps toward improving a child's life. In our everyday work at the clinic, we are given the opportunity to positively impact the lives of many children in a tremendous way. There is nothing more rewarding than the feeling we get by helping them achieve new goals and do things for the very first time. Because of this, we find constant motivation and truly believe in what we do!"

"Our approach to intensive physical therapy gives children the opportunity to achieve new skills and abilities. One of the most crucial principals of our program is to ‘prepare’ child's body for the activities of daily living. Through our unique exercises, we teach the children new motor skills. We can also help a child build adequate strength, control and flexibility, giving them the possibility to perform those needed movements used during everyday life."
